Choosing Your Wood: Walnut, Maple, Rosewood & More

All the colours in our boards are the natural colours of the wood. We never use stains or dyes, so the species you choose decides the look of your board.

American Walnut

Rich chocolate brown with a smooth, even grain. A classic premium choice that pairs beautifully with lighter woods. Shop walnut

Hard Maple

Pale cream and very dense, with a tight grain. It brings the bright contrast to our patterned boards. Shop maple

Rosewood

Deep red-brown with dramatic dark streaks. Every piece looks different. Shop rosewood

Wenge

Near-black with fine straight lines, used for strong graphic contrast. Shop wenge

Padauk

A vivid natural red that mellows to a warm brown over time. Shop padauk

Teak

Golden brown and naturally rich in oils, which helps it resist moisture. Shop teak

American Cherry

Warm reddish tone that deepens and darkens beautifully with age. Shop cherry

Mixing Woods

Combining a dark wood with a light one, such as walnut with maple, creates the high-contrast patterns our 3D and chess boards are known for.
