How to Oil and Care for Your Wooden Cutting Board

A hardwood board is built to last for years. A simple routine keeps it looking new and keeps the wood from drying out.

After Every Use

  • Wash with warm water and a little mild soap.
  • Rinse and wipe dry with a towel straight away.
  • Stand the board on its edge to air-dry so both sides breathe.

Never

  • Put the board in the dishwasher.
  • Leave it soaking in water or in the sink.
  • Dry it next to a direct heat source.

Oil It Regularly

Oil the board whenever it looks dry or lighter in colour, roughly once a month with regular use.

  1. Make sure the board is clean and completely dry.
  2. Apply a generous layer of food-grade mineral oil to every surface, including the edges.
  3. Leave it to soak in for a few hours, or overnight.
  4. Wipe off any excess oil.

Seal With Beeswax

After oiling, rub a thin layer of beeswax over the surface and buff it with a soft cloth. The wax seals in the oil and helps the board repel water.

Removing Odours and Stains

Sprinkle coarse salt on the surface, scrub with half a lemon, then rinse and dry. Re-oil afterwards.

You will find our mineral oil and beeswax in the Care collection.
